Tesco commits to Hednesford Gateway project

Tesco will open an 80,000 sq ft store at the £50m Hednesford Gateway town centre development in Staffordshire.

Construction of the supermarket will start in the next few weeks and is expected to open in time for Christmas 2012 trading.

The store will sit alongside a terrace of non-food retail units and a retail kiosk, which together will provide 38,000 sq ft of new commercial space.

The retail giant's opening and the redevelopment of the Victoria Street area is the next phase of the scheme and will create about 600 jobs.

It also includes a drill hall, which has been completed, and a 10,000 sq ft community centre to replace the existing Aquarius Community/Dance Hall.

Work is expected to begin over the next couple of months, with completion in line with the remainder of the development.

Construction began on the 9.1-acre town centre scheme in April after developer St Modwen was granted planning approval by Cannock Chase Council.
