Dairy Crest site primed for housing estate

A redundant cheese factory in the Peak District is set to become a housing development if plans are approved on Friday (13 January).

Plans to build 39 houses on the former Dairy Crest creamery site in Hartington will go before the Peak National Park Planning Authority after being recommended for approval by council officers.

Brooke Smith Planning, based in Birmingham, submitted the proposals. Details include six of the three- and four-bedroom properties being constructed for social housing.

Andrea Caplan of Brooke Smith Planning advised developer Cathelco on the pans.

She said: "It is unusual to find a large brownfield site like this in the National Park but if granted, the scheme will make a much more fitting addition to the village. Currently, the old factory dominates the view.

"The new housing scheme is visually much more appealing and the inclusion of a strong element of social housing means that more local people will be able to stay in the area and support local services including the primary school."

If the scheme goes ahead several old buildings will be converted into business units neighbouring the housing development.

A public car parking, children’s play areas and a community allotment would also be constructed.

The creamery has been vacant since it closed in August 2009.
