Don't miss Olympic gold – Bennett

The Olympics will present opportunities for businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire next year, provided they act to take advantage. That's the view of Louise Bennett, chief executive of the region's chamber, who spoke exclusively to Insider.

Although 2012 will present new challenges to businesses, there will also be opportunities, said Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce chief Bennett.

"Of course, the 'big one' is the Olympics," she said. "That will bring benefits to the whole of the UK and to Coventry and Warwickshire. I would urge every business – small or large – to plan now for how to make the most of the Olympics being held here in the city."

Bennett warned that the eurozone crisis will "continue to dominate national headlines" and Midlands businesses must be wary of its effect on the region.

"But we cannot let it stop us trading and it cannot stop us from getting the best possible deal for business," she said.

"It's been a very mixed 2011. We speak to hundreds of members across the region and there are some fantastic success stories – with companies growing and taking on new staff.

"Those companies should be applauded and supported further to continue to grow to create the wealth and jobs we need to get the economy on course for sustained growth.

Bennett praised the private sector's growth-creating power, and said that there had been some "fantastic success stories" in 2011. "Those companies should be applauded and supported further to continue to grow to create the wealth and jobs we need to get the economy on course for sustained growth.

"The chamber is here to make sure trade happens and help members to increase the amount of business they do – whether that is locally or overseas."

Bennett also called upon the government to slash red tape for businesses and said the chamber will "continue to press" the issue.
