John Carter has been appointed deputy chief executive of Northampton builders' merchant Travis Perkins.

Carter is set to leave his role as chief operating officer at the business to take up the post on 1 January.

The announcement comes during a period of restructure and reorganisation changes in Travis Perkins, creating four divisions for the company's operating businesses.

As deputy chief executive, Carter takes on responsibility for the enlarged business operating through these four divisions. He will also take charge of a wider group of central functions, including IT and customer development.

Robert Walker, chairman of Travis Perkins, said: "This promotion recognises the outstanding part that John has played, and continues to play, in the success of our business. He is a first class senior executive and we look forward to his contribution to the future development of the group."
