Student bed plans touted for go-ahead

Plans for 120 student beds at Jarratt Hall, Edgbaston, are being recommended for the green light from Birmingham City Council's planning committee.

The site is adjacent to Dale Road in the suburb, which already hosts 620 en-suite bedrooms for the University of Birmingham.

Mailbox-based Associated Architects has applied for permission to build part three-storey, part four-storey halls of residence student accommodation comprising 120 student bedrooms clustered in 25 shared apartments.

The 'L' shaped scheme also includes new plant room areas to accommodate connection into the university district heating, a landscaped terrace area, two parking spaces, 60 secure cycle parking spaces, bin store and privacy planting to the perimeter.

Residential space at the Selly Oak ward site would comprise 28,847 sq ft.

The plans are being recommended for approval by officers before they go to Birmingham City Council's planning committee on Thursday (22 December).

However, objections to the proposals were received. One resident wrote: "Surely enough is enough. With so many bedrooms added to Selly Oak's overwhelming number of student rooms this development could just finish Selly Oak off altogether.

"Student accommodation density is already overpowering the area."
