Morgan Sindall targets billion-pound nuclear deals

Warwickshire-based construction and regeneration group Morgan Sindall has opened a base in Cumbria. The company said the move came as it started targeting a range of projects in the region.

Morgan Sindall has moved into space at Westlakes Science and Technology Park in Whitehaven.

Graham Shennan, managing director of Morgan Sindall, told Insider that the raft of major nuclear industry construction contracts worth up to £1bn had been a driver in the group's latest expansion.

"We've got strategic offices across the UK, but Cumbria is a particular area of focus for our work in the energy sector," he said. "It's an area of significant potential for us; both at Sellafield and the surrounding area."

The company, which this month completed the £5.5m construction of the Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF) nuclear research centre in Whitehaven, is currently bidding for the Sellafield Infrastructure Strategic Alliance, a £1.1bn framework which will involve major infrastructure projects.

"There is the potential for up to £41bn of projects in the region over the next two decades and we have the expertise and scale to play a key role in that work," said Shennan.
