A £2m chilled pastry production site has been officially opened in Corby, creating 40 jobs.

The opening of BakeAway, formerly Parker's Fine Foods Factory, on Baird Road follows investment support from Connect Midlands.

It has recently secured a contract to supply Sainsbury's chilled pastry range. The site was officially opened by Conservative MP and author Louise Mensch, who represents Corby and East Northamptonshire, and Councillor Gail McDade, mayor of Corby borough.

Managing Director Brian Homewood said he wants to increase the turnover of the company to £9m in its second year. It is currently projected to turn over £4.5m in its next year.

There are also currently discussions ongoing with catering and business sections of Tresham College, the business said.

Homewood added: "We are currently supplying Sainsbury's nationwide with 11 new products and our longer term plans are to grow the business by identifying other distribution points for our products.

"One of our main selling points is that our pastry is made entirely from British wheat, whereas rival brands import pastry to the UK from Germany and Austria."

Connect Midlands says it has helped 300 companies to raise more than £200m since 2001. Conenct said it got involved as the company was looking at prospective sites for their factory.
