Income up at Martineau

Fee income has increased 7 per cent at Birmingham law firm Martineau over the past six months.

As the firm approaches its merger with London-based Sprecher Grier Halberstam, managing partner Bill Barker said it had won "a healthy number" of new clients over the period.

Barker added that the level of international work undertaken had also increased for the company, which also has an office in London.

The merger between Martineau and SGH is expected to complete on Thursday (1 December), with the creation of a new firm SGH Martineau LLP operating from offices in Birmingham, London and Brussels.

"The new firm will be a top 70 UK law firm, but I expect us to climb quickly once new and existing clients understand the benefits of our combined offering," said Barker.

"It is gratifying that both firms embark on the next chapter of their story in good shape, with strong performances confirming the perfect fit each firm is for the other. If we are capable of performances this strong acting alone, one can only imagine the potential we offer as a single, stronger business with a shared vision and a realistic strategy right for the times in which we find ourselves."

SGH has yet to announce half year results which will be due in January but trading in the first four months of the year suggest profit figures will be ahead of target, said Martineau.
