Something for the weekend

Men in black

To the Newton Building at Nottingham Trent University for a meeting with RBS top dog Stephen Hester. Of course, this is a very important man, and so excitement was running high.

Having somehow negotiated the ridiculously complicated system of lifts (press a button; wait for a letter to appear on a screen; sprint to a lift), we made our way to the “interview waiting room”, only to be confronted by a couple of heavies, dressed all in black. After being basically told our name wasn't down and we're not coming in, who should appear but genial half rock star, half communication supremo Nigel Meffen to usher us through. Thanks, Nige – we thought we were going to get shown the door.

For you, the disco is over

Before that we went to The Wilson Organisation's Family Business Awards in Birmingham, and who should we bump into but John Buckby, intellectual property whizzkid at Shakespeares. John was most excited as he was DJing after the event, and was set to pack the dancefloor.

What with? Well, John said he was planning on playing some prime German underground techno cuts. Alas, we couldn’t stick around to see this in action, but we’re sure it went well.

Blessed are the meek

"Gordon’s alive!"… and well, living at the National Space Centre.

That is according to one of the special guests attending the amazing Movie Mania event at the National Space Centre next month, Brian Blessed.

Known for his sonorous voice and "hearty, king-sized portrayals", Blessed has appeared in such iconic movies as Flash Gordon and Star Wars.

Joining the special guests for this charitable event will be costume characters, including Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Predator, Ironman, Wolverine, Batman, The Joker, Ghostbusters, Captain Jack Sparrow, Jedi and many more

Malika Andress, head of marketing at the National Space Centre, said: "This will be the fourth Movie Mania event we have run and each one just gets better. We are over the Moon to be joined by Brian Blessed, as well as all the iconic movie characters.

"We have added lots of traders this year to make sure that visitors can make a start on their Christmas shopping as well."
