The first application for development on Northampton's Waterside enterprise zone has been submitted.

West Northamptonshire Development Corporation has made the application for a £6.5m office scheme called the Innovation Cube.

Located opposite Northampton Railway Station, the 40,257 sq ft building will provide office accommodation and support services for up to 60 start-up businesses.

The building is being planned as part of a wider mixed use development in the centre of the zone.

Dr Ann Limb, chairman of the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership, said: "The Innovation Cube will become an excellent place to do business, bringing together the professionals and specialists we are looking to attract to Northampton. It will be a seed bed for new business to grow and then expand into the zone.

"The scheme is set to receive funding from several sources including the European Union."

Announced by government in August, Northampton's enterprise zone covers 120 hectares (296.5 acres) of predominantly brownfield land along the River Nene.
