Nottingham-based holiday operator Center Parcs has topped an energy efficiency league table compiled by the government.

The Environment Agency quizzed 2,000 supermarkets, retailers, restaurant chains, government departments, hospitals and councils to complete its Energy Efficiency Performance league table.

Twenty-two organisations ranked joint first, including Center Parcs; Manchester United; the Department of Energy and Climate Change and energy regulator Ofgem.

Center Parcs, which operates holiday resorts across the UK, was one of the first organisations to install automatic metering across all sites to reduce carbon emissions.

Martin Dalby, chief executive of Center Parcs, said: "We are delighted to be amongst leading businesses in the UK that are making a significant and concerted effort to reduce carbon emissions.

"This is a great start, but we won’t be resting on our laurels, we have set ourselves very ambitious carbon reduction targets over the coming years."
