David Barnett Farms power up with funding

A Northamptonshire farming business has installed two wind turbines after obtaining investment worth £100,000 from Barclays Business.

David Barnett Farms, based at Purston Manor in Brackley, used the cash to install two 11-kw wind turbines.

The 150-year-old family business specialises in supplying wheat, barley and oil seed rape. It also herds two flocks of ewes whose Purston lamb is sold to local butchers around the county.

Owner David Barnett said he wanted to explore alternative energy sources after electricity prices begun to soar. The wind turbines now supply the grain dryer and farmhouse with power and generated additional income for the business.

Barnett said: "I had been reviewing renewable energy sources for some time and in 2010 decided the time was right to introduce a new energy source into the farm. I am pleased with the two turbines which each produce around 24,000 kw hours per year."

Steve Clayton, Barclays Business manager, added: "David Barnett Farms is a well managed business that benefits from various farming diversification enterprises. I was pleased to provide the financial backing for the turbines which should be self-funding within seven or eight years."
