Six businesses in the East Midlands have been granted research and development funding worth a total of £800,000 from the Transport iNet.

Projects to be funded will be headed by a mix of small and medium-sized businesses and higher education institutes, said the Transport iNet.

The six successful collaborative projects cover topics including intelligent transport, air quality, wireless tracking, digital security systems and biogas refuelling.

John Frodsham, Transport iNet director, said: "The level of interest from businesses and the calibre of project suggestions has been overwhelming, demonstrating the strong desire across the region to drive innovation within engineering and manufacturing.

"The overall aim of the research and development collaborative funding is to deliver sustainable competitive advantages to the region and strengthen the ability of higher education institutes to attract additional interest in their innovation."

The Transport iNet, located at the Systems Engineering Innovation Centre (SEIC) on Loughborough University campus, is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
