Sywell Aerodrome is planning to overhaul its air traffic control facilities and install new runway lighting after completing a finance agreement with Santander Corporate Banking.

The Nottinghamshire business said the new runway lighting would be used for evening and night-time flights.

The funding line agreed with the bank was not disclosed.

As well as the airfield the business comprises a hotel called The Aviator, a museum and almost 500,000 sq ft of industrial units available for let.

Sywell was used as as a flight school for RAF pilots in the 1930s and throughout the Second World War. RAF's Wellington bombers were repaired at the site while Lancaster four-engine bombers were assembled and flight tested. The aerodrome was returned to civilian use during the 1960s.

Michael Bletsoe-Brown, managing director of Sywell Aerodrome, said: “This business has been in my family for 80 years and I am really proud to be the current managing director, particularly at a time when we are looking to make significant reinvestments back into the business to keep us at the cutting edge of aviation."
