Two West Midlands companies have been appointed as preferred bidders to provide the Solihull-based National Grid's £500m overhead line construction programme.

Warwickshire-based Morgan Sindall and Birmingham's Vinci Energies' joint venture MSVE Transmission will work on the electricity transmission overhead line contract.

The deal is worth up to £500m over the next five years.

The majority of the first year's work will be spent on the design and development of the programme of work scheduled in years two to five. The first year will also include a project to replace the conductor fittings on overhead lines.

Paul Smith, chief executive of Morgan Sindall Group, said:"We are seeing a number of opportunities in the energy sector and the combination of our specialist skills and experience of working with energy providers leaves us well placed to benefit from this trend.

"This is an excellent appointment for our construction and infrastructure business which firmly emphasises our market-leading position."
