Housing scheme gets set for green light

A residential planning application which received more than 150 objections is being recommended for approval by Birmingham City Council planning officers.

The 47-house scheme is being proposed by the Staffordshire office of Bellway Homes to be located on vacant playing fields in Erdington, Birmingham

Although no objections were received from police and fire authorities or water and environmental agencies, a petition signed by 150 people was submitted.

The petition details objections on several grounds – they said that the small flats and houses were "out of keeping" with the area and argued the number of properties being constructed on the 3.5 acre site was too high.

Complaints also stated that access to the houses could only be reached through a "dangerous bend" and said an increase in traffic and strain on local infrastructure would come as a result of the development.

Other objections were received stating that the loss of playing fields was not acceptable.

However, council officers disagreed and have recommended the proposals to be approved subject to a section 106 legal agreement. Bellway Homes has also agreed to pay £210,000 in compensation for removing the playing field.

The council's planning committee is set to vote on the scheme on Thursday (3 November).
