Tie break

We're pretty much convinced that Toby Reid will be a success in his new role of director of BioCity but that doesn't mean he doesn't still get nervous about the job.

On Wednesday, the state broadcaster knocking on Toby's door. It must have stirred him, because minutes later he tweeted: "BBC in filming at BioCity today. Everybody on best behaviour. Just spilt coffee down my tie." Dirty boy.

The price is wrong

In further tie news, we were lucky enough to be invited by Eversheds to an event at the Paul Smith store in Nottingham last week. We could get 10 per cent of everything, we were told, which sounded exciting until we realised the cheapest tie we could find was 70 quid. Not daring to check the price on anything else one of us sallied off to find the loo. Now, you’d think if a shop was charging that much for a tie, they could afford to mend the lock on the toilet door, wouldn't you?

When in Rome…

Simon Taylor, head of sports law at Freeth Cartwright Solicitors, has just been to Rome. But not just to see the Colosseum, St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican, but as part of the day job in successfully appealing decisions of the Race Director and Stewards at the historic Monza racing circuit.

Simon acts for Carlin, whose French driver Jean-Eric Vergne won the second race in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in Monza, near Milan, in May, only to have a penalty imposed when his car strayed outside a chicane.

At the Court of Appeal of the Italian Governing Body of Motorsport and before judges convened from all over Italy Simon successfully argued for the reversal of the decision, which meant Jean-Eric reclaimed first place in the race and second place in the championship standings.

Simon is a renowned legal specialist in motorsport and in the last three decades has acted on many high profile matters for clients. Carlin, a client of Simon's for many years, has traditionally provided a ladder into Formula One for many talented young drivers.

How do you get jobs like this, exactly?
