Sweet plans unveiled for British Sugar site
The 100-acre former British Sugar Facility near Telford is set to undergo a huge regeneration scheme three years after closing.
Food and retail giant Associated British Foods (ABF) has launched a joint venture with the Northern Trust Company to redevelop the site in Allscott.
The site closed in 2008 after more than 80 years in operation. At its peak, the British Sugar Facility processed more than 6,000 tonnes of sugar beet and generated 800 HGV deliveries each day.
ABF, owner of brands including Primark, Kingsmill and Ovaltine, said it hoped to regenerate more than 100 acres of the former industrial site alongside property investment company Northern Trust.
They will hold a public consultation event in the New Year during where views from members of the community and key stakeholders will be identified to assess potential uses for the site.
Mike Riding, land and regeneration director at Lancashire-based Northern Trust, said: "We are delighted to have been chosen by Associated British Foods as their partner to bring forward the redevelopment of this key site.
"Working alongside the landowner there is an opportunity to transform this extensive brownfield site to create a new sustainable community which can develop as an integrated place within the rural economy."
