Works starts on 'elite athlete' centre

Construction company ISG has commenced work on Loughborough University's £3m 'elite athlete' performance centre.

The centre, which Loughborough University says is the first of its kind in the UK, will aim to attract young sportspeople aged 16 to 18.

It will be based within the college's Gables complex, housed within a mid-nineteenth century three-storey townhouse.

Currently used as student accommodation, ISG will strip out and reconfigure the building to create communal areas and 18 ensuite bedrooms.

It will also comprise 70 additional student accommodation beds.

Jonathan Kell, ISG’s Midlands managing director, said: "Loughborough College aims to address the gap in support for some of the country’s most promising young athletes between the ages of 16 and 18 with the 'elite athlete' performance centre.

"On site facilities are extremely impressive and I’m confident that the performance centre and the new student accommodation block will further enhance the reputation of Loughborough College as a centre of sporting and educational excellence."
