Candidates not good enough for East Mids jobs - survey

Almost half of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire companies are failing to recruit staff with the correct skills and experience for the job, a report has found.

The figures, released by the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, also found that under 20 per cent of companies in the region have taken on an apprentice in the last year.

A total of 43 per cent of those surveyed said they find it hard to find the right staff with the correct skills, qualifications and attributes for advertised roles.

The survey found only 30 per cent of businesses find it very easy or quite easy to attract candidates of the right calibre for roles within their organisations. This is despite the East Midlands having about 27,000 job vacancies.

More than 440 companies in the region took part in the survey.

George Cowcher, chief executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "A highly-skilled workforce is absolutely crucial to the success of any business, yet the results of this survey provide incontrovertible evidence of what chamber members have been telling us for some time – that businesses want to expand, create jobs and develop their workforce, but are hampered by a lack of skills in the local labour market."
