Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract worth $476.91m (£302.6m) to provide engines to power the US navy's training aircraft.

The Derby-based manufacturer will create the F405 (Adour) engines for the US Department of Defense Naval Air Systems Command.

Under the five-year contract, which is worth $99.9m (£63.3m) per year, Rolls-Royce will provide services to more than 200 aircraft.

It will supply all maintenance, support, troubleshooting, parts and logistics for both the F405 engine and the aircraft gas turbine starting system.

The planes operate out of four main naval air stations - Kingsville, Texas; Meridian, Mississippi; Pensacola, Florida and Patuxent River, Maryland

Patricia O'Connell, Rolls-Royce president of customer business defence, said: "We are proud of our continued partnership with the US navy and its mission to prepare student aviators for jet carrier aviation and tactical strike missions. We look forward to another successful year of providing the best engine readiness and availability."

Work on the aircraft is expected to be completed in September 2012.
