Work has begun on a new £5m fitness centre at the University of Leicester.

The Manor Road Sports Ground centre in Oadby will include a 25 metre pool, sauna and steam rooms, spa pool, 6,458 sq ft gym and aerobics studios.

The new facilities will be connected to the university’s existing sports hall and studio with a glass corridor.

Part of the development will replace a gym and men’s outdoor changing facilities which were built about 50 years ago.

Vice chancellor Professor Sir Bob Burgess said: "I am delighted that the University is able to invest in improving its sports and fitness provision at Oadby. This will meet the significant demand from staff, students and members of the local community for these new facilities, especially the swimming pool.

"I also hope that the new facilities will enable our students to compete at a higher level in national competitions."

The work is due to be completed by September 2012 and will also provide 100 off-street parking places.
