Second student digs plans get go-ahead call
Proposals to construct a three-storey student accommodation block on the University of Birmingham's tennis courts site are being recommended for approval by council officers.
The plans, which have been brought by Nottingham-based architect Stephen George & Partners, will go before Birmingham City Council's planning committee on Thursday (13 October).
The planning committee is also being recommended to grant approval to a large-scale student accommodation plan brought forward by KD Imports at the same meeting.
A total of 35 students would be accommodated across six flats under the plans for the tennis courts site. Five flats would accommodate six en-suite bedrooms, with the ground floor comprising four en-suite bedrooms and one accessible en-suite bedroom. Each flat would accommodate a shared kitchen and living area.
Stephen George & Partners' proposals received one letter of objection from Birmingham City Councillor Deirdre Alden, who said that there was "no need" for more student accommodation in the area.
She added that spare space at the site should be used for a student car park, "as student parking on roads in Edgbaston is a problem and there is a lack of parking provision at the university".
Despite the objection, officers have recommended the plans for approval.
The officer's report said: "I consider the proposed development presents a sustainable solution towards providing university student accommodation, by building on existing hardstanding which is located on a site of established student accommodation, whilst still preserving the character and appearance of Edgbaston Conservation Area and retention of existing mature trees.
"Therefore I recommend that planning permission be granted."
