The value of mergers and acquisitions taking place in the Midlands has almost doubled over the past year – despite the number of transactions completed remaining stagnant.

However, the value of mergers, acquisitions and other deals completed in the Midlands increased from £4.8bn in 2010 to £8.9bn.

Across the UK, there were £181.4bn-worth of mergers, acquisitions, flotations, rights issues and placements in the UK in the first nine months of 2011.

This was 15.7 per cent up on figures for the same period in 2010 - despite the overall volume of deals falling by 6.7 per cent to 3,169.

The value of UK mid-market transactions was also up by 18 per cent to £159.5bn on the year with one per cent fewer transactions.

Rothschild was said to be the most active financial adviser with 58 deals while HSBC topped the total value league with £42.3bn-worth of deals.

Eversheds was the leading legal adviser on 91 deals with Sullivan & Cromwell top of the value table advising on £43bn-worth of deals.
