Investors accept risky marketplace, says Coutts

Midlands investors have become used to the volatility of the current markets, according to the managing partner of Coutts in Birmingham.

Speaking to Insider at the wealth management company's new Midlands base on Church Street, Joanna Thornell said that investors now see a more volatile state as a "normal" marketplace.

Speaking about the banking sector, Thornell said that investors are "remaining patient", despite the uncertainty surrounding the global economy.

"There’s no element of panic amongst our clients," she said. "They’ve got used to the volatility of the markets and realise this is normality for the time being. What we’re doing is providing them with a combination of investment opportunities.

"We’re talking to clients all the time, and the markets are interesting. Our clients are looking through the debate on the global economy to try and see the real picture – and it’s our job to help them do that."

Coutts moved into its 6,500 sq ft Birmingham office yesterday. The relocation shows "commitment to Birmingham", according to Thornell.

"The move was very important for us; it allows us the opportunity to grow. We now have the opportunity to expand as a business," she said.

Coutts, which has been established in Birmingham since 1994, signed a ten-year lease at Standard Life Investments’ 45 Church Street. The firm occupies the 11th and 12th floor of the building

Thornell said: "Due to continued success in the region, we had outgrown our offices at Wellesley House. Most recently, we have seen the economic downturn encourage many wealthy individuals to seek wealth managers and investment specialists they can trust, and those with a proven track record.

"The move shows a commitment to Birmingham and to the Midlands as a whole."
