Bournville College completion kicks off Longbridge project

Work has been completed on the £66m Bournville College scheme. The project marks the first finished phase of the new Longbridge town centre development, which is situated on the former MG Rover plant.

Shepherd Construction carried out the college build on behalf of Birmingham-based developer St. Modwen. The company has now handed over the 250,000 sq ft building and 4.2-acre campus to the college.

Designed by architect Broadway Malyan, Bournville College is set to act as a gateway to the new £70m Longbridge town, which is currently undergoing a 15-year regeneration scheme planned by St. Modwen and joint landowner Advantage West Midlands.

The building centres on a linear central spine which houses the classrooms. This links to ‘the street’ section of the site, which connects the blocks occupied by motor vehicle maintenance, hair and beauty and construction departments.

The learning and resource centre, which will face the new town square, has been designed with a fully-glazed façade wrapped by 34 glulam beams

Peter Millett, managing director for Shepherd Construction’s West Division, said: "We're delighted to hand over the college. Not only will it provide fantastic modern facilities and a superb learning environment for the local community but the building also symbolises a new era for Longbridge."
