Nottingham park applies for Lottery funds

Nottingham's Highfields Park could be given a boost after the city council applied for £3.4m of Heritage Lottery Funding to assist with the site's planned revamp.

The bid comes after the council recently secured £3.2m of Lottery cash toward a £5m transformation of the Forest Recreation Ground.

If the proposal is successful, Highfields Park's Maid Marian pleasure boat would be restored to provide family boating trips.

Improvements would also be made to the lake and the surrounding historic buildings would be repaired with the cash. The park said it would also pay for a park ranger and create a new children's wet-play area.

Councillor David Trimble, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and tourism at Nottingham City Council, said: "In the last two years we have spent over £10m, which has gone some way to enhancing the park, but this investment would enable us to complete our restoration plans.

"Since we have started to make improvements to our parks, people have realised what 'hidden gems' we have in the city. It's going to be a long journey but we're hopeful that our bid will be successful and that we can restore Highfields Park to its former glory."
