Morgan Sindall flies high with airport tower

Construction company Morgan Sindall has begun the construction of a £10m air traffic control tower at Birmingham Airport.

Scheduled for completion in 2013, the tower will stand more than 100 ft above ground level and will be home to the airport’s air traffic control provider NATS.

It will replace the current control tower at the old Elmdon Airport site, which has been in use since 1939.

The scheme follows the completion of Birmingham Airport’s £13m One Terminal project in February 2011 which was also carried out by Warwickshire-based Morgan Sindall.

Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport, said: "This iconic tower will be furnished with state-of-the-art radar and navigation equipment and will give the controllers a better view of the airfield, above buildings that have been developed over the last few years.

"It will also allow them to see the end of the extended runway, a development that will be complete in 2014 and will allow airlines to fly to more long-haul destinations worldwide."
