Green light for Mercia Marina retail site

Approval has been granted for a £1.3m waterside shopping development in South Derbyshire.

The retail site will be constructed on the 74-acre Mercia Marina site and will create up to 25 jobs.

Proposals for the marina's The Boardwalk centre was accepted by South Derbyshire District Council after revisions were made to the design to reduce the height of the structure.

The Boardwalk will consist of six ground floor retail units within two one-storey 'wings', which will sit either side of a central atrium, forming the seventh shop.

Mercia Marina said the outlets will be earmarked for specialist retailers including a farm shop selling local produce.

Robert Neff, general manager of Mercia Marina, said: "We’re delighted that The Boardwalk has been received so positively by the council. We’ve worked very closely with the planners to come up with a scheme which we think will benefit everyone in the local community, and bring a welcome boost to tourism."

Work is also underway on the marina site to create 18 holiday lodges. Planning permission was recently granted for £2m gastro pub and hotel The Lighthouse.

Construction is expected to commence on both The Lighthouse and Boardwalk next year.
