The Casa Hotel in Chesterfield has put in place a new food recycling scheme as part of its ongoing waste management and recycling efforts.

The kitchen is sending all food waste - except meat and plate scrapings - to nearby Walton Lodge Farm (belonging to the hotel’s owner, Steve Perez), where it will be fed to pigs that will in turn be used by Casa for bacon, sausages and pork.

Further enhancing Casa’s green credentials, a member of the hotel staff is transforming used cooking oil from the kitchen to produce a bio-fuel that he uses to power his car instead of diesel.

Fancy a brew?

Derby media company Steve Orme Productions was recently commissioned by Dutch brewery Bavaria to capture this year's Senior Open Golf Championship.

Bavaria, whose UK base is in Burton-on-Trent, was the official beer sponsor of the event, held at Walton Heath in Surrey.

Steve Orme from Mickleover photographed and filmed Bavaria's activities during the four-day competition which involved tasting sessions for the public and entertainment by Jeremy Dale with his trick-shot show. It was Steve's first commission for Bavaria. Here’s hoping he didn't partake in too much corporate hospitality and he remembers it.

The chic of it

East Midlands pub group The Orange Tree has teamed up with two textile design graduates to create beer tents with a unique look and feel at two of Leicestershire’s most popular music festivals.

The group approached De Montfort University (DMU) textile design graduates Carly Barton, 23, and Nicola Roffe, 22, and asked them to design textile installations and soft furnishings to transform the festival beer tents at Summer Sundae and Strawberry Fields.

Their creations, using lace, silks, vintage fabrics and beads, turned the Orange Tree’s bars at the Summer Sundae festival in Leicester earlier this month into a vintage circus-inspired main bar and a ‘utility chic’ real ale and cocktail bar.

Now their designs are being used for a second time at the festival beer tents at the three-day Strawberry Fields festival, at Cattows Farm, Heather near Coalville, which starts on 26 August.

"Utility chic", eh? You don’t get that down the Kean’s Head.
