New Birmingham library green lighted

Share | |
The £193m Library of Birmingham has been given planning permission. The Centenary Square scheme, which is due to complete in 2013, was given the nod by the city council's planning committee, which granted planning permission for the new library on Thursday. Its decision came only days after culture and tourism minister Margaret Hodge said the existing 1970s central library in Chamberlain Square would not be given listed status. Some 250 construction jobs are expected to be created in the building process. The library is to be integrated with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre at ground floor and mezzanine level. The shared entrance would be below a public balcony.
