Solar project to create 100 jobs
Up to 100 jobs are set to be generated in Stoke-on-Trent as the city council prepares to install solar panels on thousands of its properties.
Energy giant E.ON and building maintenance company Kier Stoke have joined forces with Stoke-on-Trent City Council to install the energy saving panels on up to 4,000 houses.
The scheme will create up to 100 jobs with Kier, said the council.
Roles will include roofers, electricians, delivery drivers, scaffolders, customer liaison officers and team leaders.
Councillor Mark Meredith, cabinet member for economic development, said: "This project gives a local workforce the chance to learn new skills and take part in one of the most exciting innovative projects the city has to offer.
"What we want to do, is train people with existing skills to broaden their experience – for example, electricians who have no experience of working at heights will be trained to do so as the panels are installed on the property’s roof."
The council signed a £4m agreement with energy provider E.ON last year to put the panels on city council and privately-owned houses. As well as the panels, houses in Northwood, Birches Head and Middleport have been given external wall insulation to encourage energy saving.
