West Mids businesses make top ten
Two businesses from the West Midlands have made it into a list of the top ten family businesses in the UK for 2011. Coventry Airport owner Sir Peter Rigby makes the sixth spot on the list.
According to research commissioned by the Institute for Family Business (IFB), the UK’s top family-owned businesses have seen increased sales in the last year.
Birmingham-based Secured Computer Holdings (SCH) Group, which was founded by the Rigby family, secures the number six spot on the list with £2.2bn of sales.
Yellow digger manufacturer JCB, which is headquartered in Staffordshire, was named as the eighth fastest growing family business in the UK. The company secured revenues of £2bn, and moved up a place from its number nine spot in 2010.
IFB director general Grant Gordon said: "The UK has seen difficult trading conditions in the last year, but there have been some remarkable success stories among the UK’s top family businesses.
"With family firms contributing almost one third of our GDP the family business sector is becoming an increasingly important part of the UK’s future economic growth."
