Something for the weekend

Slipping up

To Nottingham Racecourse with Greg Simpson of Press for Attention PR and Owain Griffiths of Head and Griffiths. A depressing day’s racing was nearly at an end, and with our pockets emptying rapidly, Greg decided to go big on the last race. He’d win £150 if his nag came in first. And it did to scenes of joy from the PR wunderkind.

Finding his winning betting slip wasn’t so easy, though, and what started out as a joke five minutes later turned into a stressful, frantic search through every pocket about his person. He eventually found it, of course and headed off to the bar. Tip for Greg: never wear a boating blazer to the races; those pockets are just way too complicated.

Bin there, done that

Chris Hockey, Director at blue collar recruitment agency Encore Personnel Services, became a bin man for the day to raise money for a local charity. ‘Donate a Day’, the charity initiative set up by Encore Personnel for 2011 will see each staff member donating a working day to work on the site at one of the company's clients.

The clients, in turn, will then pay for the hours worked at the applicable hourly rate and the money raised will then be donated to the local charity at the end of the year when all staff members have done their bit.

Chris Hockey decided to do his stint for charity by working as a bin man for Blaby District council, a local Leicestershire council. Starting work at 7am on a Friday morning Chris joined up with his crew, consisting of Bob the driver and two fellow loaders Jamie and Rich.

The route took in an area where Chris used to live and go to school, with a poignant moment where he even emptied the bin of his old house. Sniff.

Feeling below par

Nottingham businessman Jason Preston has come top in a major Pro-Am golf tournament. Jason won the Pro-Am competition at the British Par 3 Championships held last week at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire partnered by European Tour golfer Seve Benson. The pair finished the two rounds with a combined score of 12 under par – three shots clear of the rest of the field. Jason is a director and co-founder of 2bm in Chilwell. He said: “I am over the moon with my success with Seve at the event which has really capped the year so far both on the golf course and in business.
