Priory club swings into action with £6m funding

Edgbaston Priory Club has been granted a £6.4m loan from the Birmingham office of Handelsbanken.

The funding will be used to complete the tennis club's multi-million redevelopment plans, which will allow it to host international racquet tournaments such as the annual AEGON Classic.

It is estimated the AEGON Classic would be worth about £9m to the city's tourism economy.

New squash, gym and leisure facilities are also planned for the site together with a refurbishment of the clubhouse, bar and restaurant.

Graham Crookson, corporate manager at Handelsbanken Birmingham, said: "This is a fantastic development not only for the club but for Birmingham also as Edgbaston Priory Club is committed to developing tennis in the wider community.

"The decision to provide the finance was an easy one because the business case was compelling and was brilliantly presented by the club’s chief executive, Robert Bray, and chairman Michael Fallows, both of whom have a wealth of experience in the fitness and leisure market."
