BAM awarded £35m Derby project

BAM Construction in the Midlands has won a contract to refurbish and rebuild Derby City Council's headquarters as part of a £35m project.

The scheme, which is being managed by Mace, includes the construction of a shop, office space, a council chamber and member accommodation.

During the last few months the current building has been partially stripped out and demolished in preparation for the construction phase of the project.

Through the refurbishment, the River Derwent will be used to generate electricity into the building. Once completed, the building will be made to be more energy efficient and its capacity will rise to accommodate 1,900 employees.

BAM's director Richard Dakin said: "This will be a striking looking new and refurbished building for the council. BAM’s considerate style of building is well known across the UK and we’ll bring that together with a first rate team to deliver this major project for the city.’

After reviewing its property portfolio last year, Derby City Council said the refurbishment was "considered the best option" for providing office accommodation and bringing all of its divisions under one roof.
