North Lincs in biomass station boost

Hundreds of jobs are set to be created in North Lincolnshire after the green light was given to build a biomass station.

Power station operator Drax Power has been given the go-ahead to build two biomass stations in Immingham and Yorkshire.

Earlier this month (August 2011), the Selby-based power station operator called for more government support for biomass power generation and said it "stands ready to transform into a predominantly renewable generator".

Energy minister Charles Hendry said two biomass stations will produce enough electricity to meet the needs of more than a million homes.

Hendry said: "It is vital that we get investment in new power stations up and down the country to ensure secure energy supplies for people's homes and businesses.

"I am very pleased to give the go-ahead for these two new biomass power stations in Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. They will not only enhance our security of supply, but provide low-carbon electricity that reduces our carbon dioxide emissions."

The Ouse Renewable Energy Plant at Selby and the Heron Renewable Energy Plant at Immingham will each produce enough electricity to power more than 500,000 home.

During construction, the government said both developments will employ an average of about 600 people on site and have total workforces of around 150 when operational.
