Collins condemns "copycat" riots

The leader of Nottingham City Council has condemned rioting in the city during which an attempted break-in to the Victoria Shopping Centre was recorded.

Jon Collins called the action "mindless copying" of the riots which began in London on Sunday (7 August).

Collins, who is also chairman of Nottinghamshire Police Authority, said: "The disorder that took place in St Ann's was sporadic and on a much smaller scale to what has been happening in London and elsewhere."

Responding to reports that moer than 40 vehicles had been trashed in the St Ann's area, Collins added: "Let's be clear that what occurred was not a response to anything that has happened locally but simply a small number of young people mindlessly copying what they've seen happening elsewhere.

"The disturbances in Nottingham seemed to mainly involve young people so I would urge parents to be aware of where their children are and ensure they are not getting involved in any trouble, either deliberately or inadvertently."
