55 Colmore Row set for revamp

Share | |

Plans have been submitted to revamp 55 Colmore Row to make it the "premier business address in Birmingham city centre".

Plans have been put forward to extend and remodel the rooftop, replace the existing 1990s post-modern façade on the Barwick Street frontage, reconfigure floors and create a "high-profile" entrance foyer incorporating the historic banking hall. There would also be works to "improve and maintain" the listed Victorian Colmore Row frontage.

The design team is led by fund manager AEGON Asset Management on behalf of owner AEGON UK Property Fund and development partner Abstract Land.

James Howarth, managing director of Abstract Land, said: "55 Colmore Row has played its own significant role in Birmingham's economic history and our proposals to revitalise the building are a real milestone in its lifecycle.

"Having seen centuries' worth of change to our city, it's only right that this building continues to play its own part in the success of Birmingham’s commercial centre"

Architectural practice Aedas has also worked on the scheme with planning consultancy GW Planning.

It is hoped that once complete the site will provide 153,000 sq ft of "BREEAM excellent, Grade A accommodation".

The current occupier Wragge and Co is planning to relocate from the building and is paying rent until 2017 but could leave in 2013, Insider was told.

Joint agents for the building are Knight Frank and Colliers International.
