Something for the weekend

Far flung

The Begbies Traynor Treasure Hunt around Nottinghamshire ended in chaos last week in the beer garden of The Plough, Normanton on the Wolds, with Sterling Capital Reserve’s Nic Rotton atop a bucking bronco. But not for long.

Nic was on the bronco because it was the last challenge of the evening where teams could earn extra points depending on how long they could stay on for. Credit to Nic - he whipped the crowd up into a fervour each time by bouncing around enthusiastically on the safety ring thing (think Tigger from Winnie the Pooh), which compared well to the other contestants who were far more fearful.

He also managed a decent time, hanging on for well nearly 40 seconds before being flung off, but sadly lost out in the medals.

Several careful lady drivers

Leave your stereotyped, old-fashioned ideas with Jeremy Clarkson in the cloakroom, please because Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with The Fire Fighters Charity to give women throughout the county the opportunity to get behind the wheel of some weird and wonderful vehicles.

On 25 September the charity will host a Ladies Driving Challenge at Newark Showground and those taking part will be given the chance to get to grips with vehicles such as a tanks, diggers, HGVs and, of course, fire engines.

Registration has opened for this year’s Ladies’ Driving Challenge and a number of East Midlands companies are already on board to help give women drivers the drive of their lives. Steady now…

Touch me

Nottingham Rugby chief executive, and England touch trialist, Simon Beatham was celebrating on Saturday as his Touch Rugby side, The Great Ramondoes, took the top spot at the Nottingham Social Touch competition.

The tournament, organised by Perfect Motion, was held as part of the Testimonial Year for two of Nottingham Rugby’s longest serving players, David ‘Jacko’ Jackson and Neil ‘Fowkesy’ Fowkes , with all proceeds going to the local charity, Balls to Poverty.

Beatham’s ‘Great Ramondoes’, named after one of the players, beat Jacko’s ‘Team Too Ripped’ 6-5 in the semi-finals, and Fowkesy’s ‘Team Dave’ 3-2 after a drop off in the final.

In the mixed competition ‘The Bees’ held off a ‘Black Ops’ fight-back, featuring England Men’s Open player Rohan Lee, in the semi-finals to win 8-7, before edging out ‘Here Comes the Boom’ 5-4 in the final.

These team names are surely hiding a multitude of insecurities.
