Birmingham named in 'costliest city' list
Birmingham has been ranked as the 150th most expensive city in the world to live in. That was the result of a study from human resources consultant Mercer, which surveyed 214 global cities.
The city – which slipped eight places from 158th in 2010 - was the only English destination other than London to make the 2011 Cost of Living Survey.
Birmingham sits two places behind Glasgow, which secured the 148th spot. London was the most expensive city to live in the UK, at number 18.
Catherine Gervais, global mobility expert at Mercer, said: "Most UK cities have moved up the list following the loss in value of the US dollar against the British pound, the rise in cost of rental accommodation and increased prices on goods and services following the vat increase."
Luanda in Angola is the world's most expensive city for expatriates for the second year running, according to the survey.
