West Midlands manufacturers looking to break into the aerospace and defence sectors are being urged to attend an event discussing expectations of suppliers, current trends and future opportunities.

The Reach for the Sky event is being held by Manufacturing Advisory Service – West Midlands (MAS-WM) at Wolverhampton Science Park on Friday (15 July).

Keynote speakers will come from the Ministry of Defence and Aero Engine Controls. They will discuss how to get into the market and upcoming opportunities, including single aisle aircraft and advancements in composite materials.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from existing suppliers to the sector, including CHH CoNeX, G&O Springs and Abbey Metal Finishing Company. Support organisation SC21 will also attend the event.

Peter Jones, project manager at SC21, said: "Aerospace and defence has stayed pretty strong through the global recession and we’re now looking at a host of new model introductions, with a focus on narrow body jets and the launch of the Dreamliner that utilises a host of new composite material technology.

"Over 45,000 people are employed in the Midlands and our region – with major clusters in Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton - accounts for 25 per cent of the £20bn-strong UK industry."
