Samworth Brothers, the Leicestershire food supplier behind the Ginsters pies brand, is among the nominees at the inaugural Private Business Awards.

The company, based in Melton Mowbray, has been shortlisted for family business of the year. Northampton-based budget retailer 99p Stores is nominated for the High Growth Business of the Year accolade.

The awards are sponsored by accountant PwC and are held in association with HSBC Private Bank and in support of the charity LEAP.

Paul Norbury, regional private business leader at PwC, said: "Private businesses are all too often seen as less glamorous than listed companies, but in fact are the foundation of the British economy and will be integral as the country grows out of recession. These awards really do showcase the very best of private companies and to be short-listed from over 300 applicants is to be congratulated.

"I am really looking forward to sharing the stories of these companies and their successes and proving that we have some extremely talented and innovative private businesses in this country."

The winners of the inaugural Private Business Awards will be announced at a dinner at The Savoy Hotel, London on Thursday 8 September.
