£15m housing scheme completed
The former British Union Shoe Machinery (BUSM) on Ross Walk, Leicester, has had a makeover as the construction of 119 homes on the site has been completed.
The £15m project is the first phase in the redevelopment of the former BUSM works, a 30-acre site on the River Soar.
Work has been carried out by Westleigh Developments, Leicester City Council, landowners Trafalgar Global and Trustees of GS Fashions Retirement Benefit Fund.
The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and two housing associations have also been involved in the regeneration.
A mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments and two-, four- and six-bedroom houses have been on site through the first stage of the development.
The affordable homes are funded by grants from the HCA, housing associations and government funding provided through Leicester City Council.
Development of the site is taking place in four phases, with phase two likely to begin in the autumn. Once complete, the project will comprise 1,200 homes, six play areas for children, shops, cafes, commercial units and a nursery, as part of the Abbey Meadows regeneration area project.
