Npower 'lined up for £5bn sell-off'
Electricity supplier Npower is rumoured to be the subject of a £5bn sale after its owner hired Goldman Sachs to review its future.
According to reports, the Worcestershire-based company may be disposed as parent company RWE struggles to pay off debts.
The Sunday Times reported that Germany-based RWE was now considering a sale to alleviate its debt burden.
The prospect of a sale was also attributed to RWE's need to invest money in a new generation of green power stations and the company's unhappiness with British energy policy.
Iberdrola, the Spanish parent company of Scottish Power, is regarded as a likely buyer, said the paper.
Npower, one of the UK's 'big six' energy suppliers, provides gas and electricity to nearly seven million homes. It generates 8 per cent of the UK’s electricity and employs 11,000 staff.
