The boss of Willenhall discount retailer Poundland has been named Chief Executive of the Year by British Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (BVCA).

Jim McCarthy picked up the award at the organisation's Portfolio Company Awards ceremony in London.

The prize is awarded to the boss of a private equity or venture capital-backed company based in the UK. Poundland was bought last year by private equity firm Warburg Pincus in a deal thought to be worth £200m.

Mark Florman, chief executive of the BVCA, said: "The management teams here tonight represent the best our industry has to offer, and are a perfect illustration of what can be achieved through sheer hard work and talent.

"These are the only awards in the country which celebrate the achievements of companies that are backed by private equity and venture capital, and ultimately it is their performance which makes our industry tick. Congratulations to all the winners."
