Record attempt well supported

A world-record breaking bra chain attempt got an extra lift, thanks to the services of Wolverhampton delivery business APC Overnight. It has provided the use of its 120 depots nationwide as collection points where people can donate their unwanted and unloved bras to the Bra Chain Guinness World Record breaking attempt on 31 July.

The bra chain is hoping to raise £200,000 for national charities Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Women’s Aid, as well as Worcestershire Breast Care Unit.

Campaign organiser Karen Tomalin, and head of the Bra Chain, said: "We've been overwhelmed by people from all over the country wanting to donate their bras, so we're thrilled to have APC on board."

We got game

Business-minded students from Birmingham City University have been crowned champions in the UK heat of the European Business Master Cup competition, a business simulation game open to all university students.

Hosted by Birmingham City University for the second year running, the event involved nearly 30 students from Birmingham City University, Aston University and the University of Liverpool battle it out to become UK champions and represent UK universities in the international finals being held in Stuttgart early next year.

Professor David Tidmarsh, vice-chancellor of Birmingham City University, said: "This is a great opportunity for students to develop and practice their business skills in a safe environment and is an example of how we are assisting our students with their employability in an ever competitive market."

The university will represent the UK at the EBMC Finals in Stuttgart in January.

Time to Give & Gain

More than 500 volunteers from 50 West Midlands companies took some time away from their desks this week to join in with Give & Gain Day, the UK's only national day of employee volunteering.

Employees from companies including AF Blakemore, Jaguar Land Rover, Lloyds Banking Group, Martineau, and NP Aerospace all took part in the volunteering day.

Run by Business in the Community (BITC), this year's campaign focussed on providing pupils from 19 schools with employment skills and job hints.

Teams of volunteers took part in three events at Birmingham City University, University of Wolverhampton and University of Warwick. They provided mock job interviews, guidance on writing CVs, presentation training, telephone skills and ‘What’s my line’ quiz game where you have to guess what jobs people do

David Darlaston, chief executive at BITC in the West Midlands, said: “There is increasing political and public focus on localism and people being empowered to make a personal difference in their communities. Volunteering is one way in which businesses can start to build real relationships and help to transform the communities they live and work in."
