Blues boss arrested in money laundering claims

Share | |

The owner of Birmingham City Football Club has been charged with five counts of money laundering.

Carson Yeung was arrested at his home in Hong Kong in connection with laundering HK$721.3m (£57.4m). He has since been released on bail and no plea has been entered yet.

In a statement, the Hong Kong police said that its Narcotics Bureau officers had searched two locations - one on Hong Kong Island and one in Kowloon, and seized some documents.

The statement continued: "The arrested person has been charged with five counts of dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of an indictable offence. An active police investigation is underway."

Yeung is next to appear in court on 11 August.

He is the Birmingham City's largest single shareholder with a 29.9 per cent stake.

A statement from Birmingham City FC's acting chairman Peter Pannu said: "Carson is assisting with enquiries that have nothing to do with the operation of Birmingham International Holdings (the Hong Kong business that owns the football club stake) in Hong Kong and therefore nothing to do with the operation of the club and relate to other matters."
