Alliance Boots leads Sunday Times list
Nottingham-based Alliance Boots has remained top of the Sunday Times Deloitte Top Track 100 league table, it was revealed this weekend.
The table ranks Britain's 100 private companies with the biggest sales.
Alliance Boots led the way in first place again with £23.3bn of sales and £1.4bn of profits. It has a total of 115,500 staff. The pharmaceutical giant also has a base in Switzerland.
It was followed by five other East Midlands companies. They included Nottinghamshire-based value retailer Wilkinson (24th), Gala Coral in Nottingham (33rd), Leicestershire's Samworth Brothers (70th), Bowmer & Kirkland in Derbyshire (83rd) and Derbyshire's Bloor Holdings (92nd).
Companies based across the Midlands that feature in the table employ 221,000 staff with combined sales of £40.2bn and profits of £2.5bn.
Chris Loughran, head of the Midlands region at Deloitte - title sponsor of the league table, said: "Large private companies are playing an increasingly important role in the UK's economy, and it's really encouraging to see the Midlands feature so strongly again in this year's league table.
"While current macroeconomic conditions leave no room for complacency, the featured companies have proved that they lead the way in resilience and adaptability; they continue to make an invaluable contribution towards sustaining jobs and growth."
