RICS to step up eco role

RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) said it is set to take a "key role" in helping establish the UK as a world leader in sustainable construction and refurbishment.

The institution said it will step up to spearhead schemes involving the establishment of a method for measuring embodied carbon, investigating the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), and developing the Ska environmental assessment tool for sustainable building fit outs.

RICS said it would also help the government carry out sustainable fit outs of its office stock using the Ska rating tool.

Deborah Walsh, head of policy and communications at RICS in the Midlands, said: "RICS welcomes the government's response to the IGT report and is fully committed to meeting the challenges that are set out. We will be working closely with the construction and property industries and the government.

"Co-ordinated action across the construction industry will be essential if we are to meet the challenges presented by sustainability and the need to reduce carbon from the construction and refurbishment process."
